With students in first through fifth grade
At pépinières St-Julien School (Rouen), Escola Básica da Glória (Aveiro – Portugal)
Within the framework of this project, the artist and graphic designer Damien Monteau goes back and forth between a school in Rouen and a school in Aveiro. He offers several workshops on the principle of blind folding (cadavre-exquis): photographic collages (which will then constitute the edition), or a work of drawing with light tablets.
The photographs used during the workshops come from image banks previously constituted by Damien Monteau from the respective visual universes of the children from Rouen and Aveirenses. Unexpected formal and cultural encounters appear in the middle of the pencils, the collages and between the children. As the work progresses, the images are shared, exchanged, linked, confronted, cut out, sometimes demystified but above all commented on and re-appropriated.
A playful edition is created from the photographic collages. Each page of the book is divided in two, so that the top and bottom can be flipped through independently. In the manner of a cadavre-exquis, a multitude of combinations becomes possible, to give new and unexpected forms that cohabit with each other. The collages of the children of Rouen and Aveiro are each identified with a corresponding letter (R) and (A), discreetly placed in the compositions.
As part of the ” Jumelages ” initiatives, in partnership with DRAC, the cities of Rouen and Aveiro, CreArt, and the France-Portugal Season.
