Michel Poivert has been invited, on the occasion of Marleen Sleeuwits’ exhibition, to discuss moving beyond the conventional notion of photography as an image and the affirmation of the ‘photographic’ as a field of experimentation. “Materiality, tangibility, substances, space, narratives, recycling, hybridisation: making photography today is no longer simply a matter of taking photographs.”
A professor of art history at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, Michel Poivert is also a critic and exhibition curator. He is the author of numerous books on photography, the latest of which, Contre-Culture dans la photographie contemporaine, was published in 2022 by Textuel. This anthology, comprising 180 works by 130 photographers, traces the contours of a contemporary movement that tends to blur the boundaries between photography, the applied arts and so-called ‘visual arts’.
The lecture will take place at the Centre photographique Rouen Normandie.
