We are pleased to announce the winner of the 50cc Air de Normandie creation and production grant.
The jury, composed of Stéphanie Solinas (photographer), David Benassayag (co-director, Le Point du Jour), Raphaëlle Stopin (director, Centre photographique Rouen Normandie), Sacha Tremouille (co-director, Cadre en Seine), and Yvan Poulain (director, L’Artothèque, Espaces d’art contemporain de Caen), unanimously selected SABINE MEIER and her ongoing project, Les Cellules, launched in 2023.
The jury appreciated the artist’s demanding journey and the way she has managed, within the four walls of her studio, series after series and with remarkable perseverance, to build a body of work that is both complex in its execution and clear in its themes. Complex because, prior to taking the photograph, she creates architectural volumes that are sometimes monumental, and clear because she continually rearticulates this paradox at the heart of photographic creation, which the artist herself sums up in these words: “the gap between the visible world and its representations.”
The jury is pleased to recognize the work of an artist who has long been developing a unique body of work, hailing from a generation that often receives less support for creative endeavors, and thus to encourage her in this new project.
Sabine Meier studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in Christian Boltanski’s studio. She initially trained as a painter before turning to photography. Her work is driven by a reflection on the representation of space, a tradition that began in the Renaissance, continued throughout modern art, and was later taken up, in particular, by conceptual and minimalist artists.
Sabine Meier’s work has been exhibited in various venues, both in France and abroad, notably at the MuMa in Le Havre, the Dostoevsky Museum in Saint Petersburg, the Château d’Eau in Toulouse, and the Knockdown Center in New York; and more recently at the Centre d’art de la Matmut and the Düsseldorf Photo+ festival. Her photographs are included in several private and public collections, including the National Contemporary Art Fund, the FRAC Normandy, the Goethe-Institut, and the MuMa. She is represented by the Rupert Pfab Gallery (Düsseldorf) and the Annie Gabrielli Gallery (Montpellier).
