Drawing Dreams 2
With patients in the pulmonary follow-up care and rehabilitation units as well as the palliative care unit at the Bois-Guillaume University Hospital.
In the spring of 2024.
Following up on the first phase of the “Dessiner les rêves” project at the Raymond Lerch Children’s Center, Marion Dutoit and Théophile Trossat are now working in two wards at the Bois-Guillaume University Hospital. Patients in these wards are hospitalized for periods ranging from two weeks to several months. Their days, though punctuated by medical appointments and meals, are long, especially in winter. It is therefore a place that seems conducive to daydreaming and escapism.
During the first three days of the workshops, the two artists transformed the patients’ room into a darkroom using blackout fabric, in order to project the outdoor landscape onto the interior of the room. The process, which lasted about fifteen minutes, served as a dedicated time for dialogue to gather the patients’ dreams.
Once the dream stories had been collected, Marion Dutoit set up a corner featuring a sewing machine, spools of thread, and embroidery beads, where she embroidered the motifs revealed earlier in the week onto healthcare workers’ scrubs and hospital sheets: Scandinavian moose, West Bank landscapes, the hare-man, and vintage cars, among others. Embroidery, a collective activity, is yet another opportunity to spend time with the patients and continue engaging with them.
In December, Théophile Trossat collected the embroidered gowns and sheets to dress the healthcare workers and take a series of portraits of them.
Presentation: A journal, similar to the first phase of the project, and an exhibition featuring fabrics and photographs from both parts of the project. The exhibition will also be on display at PORTE 10, the cultural space at Charles Nicolle University Hospital, from February 23 to May 24, 2024.
