With the inmates,

at the Argentan detention center

Fall 2020

Inspired by architecture, scenic art or cinema, Guillaume Martial’s photographic work deals with our appropriation of places and our relationship to the lived space. By placing characters in real settings, his research questions our relationship to the spatial environment, between documentary and fiction.

The workshops imagined by the photographer lead the participants to build imaginary visual stories by physically staging themselves, thus becoming the protagonists of fictions of their imagination. Bird-characters, interpreted by the masked inmates, interact with the space and the penitentiary universe (cells and living spaces…).
